Many insurance plans help cover the cost
When a wig is prescribed as a cranial prosthesis, it is treated as a medical device rather than a cosmetic item — which is what makes reimbursement possible. Here’s the process, and we’ll help you at every step.
Talk to your doctor
Ask your oncologist, dermatologist or physician for a prescription written for a “cranial prosthesis” (not a “wig”), including your diagnosis and the billing code A9282.
Call your insurance
Confirm your plan covers a cranial prosthesis. Ask about pre-authorization, your reimbursement amount or percentage, whether an in-network provider is required, and how many units are allowed per year.
Get a letter of medical necessity
Have your physician write a short letter explaining your condition and why the cranial prosthesis is medically necessary for your care and well-being.
Choose & fit your unit with us
We help you select and fit the right unit, then provide an itemized, insurance-ready invoice that lists it as a “cranial prosthesis” with code A9282 and our business tax details.
Submit your claim
Send the prescription, letter of medical necessity, itemized invoice and your insurer’s claim form to your insurance company for reimbursement.
If denied, appeal
Denials are common and often overturned. Add a more detailed letter from your doctor. HSA/FSA funds may also apply, and a medical wig can be tax-deductible in some cases.
